The Javanese often say that a man is considered to be a real man if he has a house, a wife, a horse, a Keris dagger, and a bird. There are millions of birds in captivity throughout Indonesia, songbirds being some of the most highly prized and sought after. Sales of these birds can range from one Euro to tens of thousands of Euros, depending on the species and many other factors.

Audio recordings are used to attract birds and to trap them for resale in the bird markets. The bird industry is massive and regardless of how one feels about it, will not be fading into the past anytime soon. The recordings presented here, selected from rare audio cassettes, are of a variety of native Indonesian song birds that are popular among bird lovers. Some tracks resemble sound art or audio collage, some are looped or accompanied with background music or other sounds, perhaps recorded live in the wild or in the home of a bird owner. The expressed purpose of these cassette recordings is and was to attract wild birds, merely one example of the offshoot markets established around the Indonesian bird industry.
